Carla Guggenheim was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Iowa and Kansas. She graduated from the State University of New York with a degree in dance. She danced and taught for several years before entering Osteopathic Medical School in Des Moines, Iowa. Following graduation in 1988, she completed a DO internship and an MD residency at Michigan State University. Her Fellowship in Rheumatology was completed at the University of Iowa in 1994.
She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has extensive experience caring for the rural population of Iowa, the urban population of Lansing and professionally related problems of musicians, dancers, actors and artists. She has taught residents and medical students for years and has been awarded "Teacher of the Year" by the MSU Medicine Residents. She has combined her wide ranging interests in the wisdom of the body through dance and moving, internal medicine, rheumatology with rudimentary knowledge of acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy, Ayer Vedic Medicine, Chinese herbal medication, and numerous "body" therapies. Her goal is to enable patients to flourish by minimizing medical intervention and improving health. She and her daughter Alena are starting the first Naturopathic Rheumatology Residency in October 2009.
Alena Guggenheim was born in California and grew up in California, Iowa and Michigan. She graduated from Reed College in 2002 with a degree in microbiology. She graduated from National College of Natural Medicine in 2007. She is a fourth generation physician (MD, MD, DO, ND). She is currently a resident in at the Center for Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She delights in educating her patients in disease prevention and optimization of the body's vital forces.
